Ok. I have realized something today and that is that I counted Sunday as one of our days for Lent. Lent is supposed to be the 40 days from Ash Wednesday to the Saturday before Easter Sunday not including the Sundays along the way. The Sundays along the way are supposed to be mini-Easters, respites from the hard time of Lent. I know that we all want to observe that. That is why this is Lent Day 7 (again), because we want to observe the Sundays, not plow on through. Here are the readings for today.
Genesis 37:25-36
1 Corinthians 2:1-13
Mark 1:29-45

It always confuses me in the beginning of Mark. Jesus is baptized, the clouds burst open and a voice from heaven calls Jesus God's beloved son. Then Jesus goes through town saying that the kingdom of heaven is near. But he tells the people he heals, not to tell anyone, and he silences the demons because they know who he is. Anyone have any suggestions about what is going on with that?
Jesus is so gracious.
even as he heals the man in Mark out of compassion, he knows that the man will not obey his command to keep the miracle private.
we really do have the secret to life. the cure-all powers of Jesus' blood are readily available to us if only we will make ourselves readily available to Jesus.
Anonymous, my own, totally un-informed opinion of that has always been that Jesus knew that once it was known, he would be killed and that He wanted to teach/do as much as He could accomplish before going to the cross. I have no idea if that's even remotely correct, but it's my reasoning.
I see this great anticipation building in both of the NT passages. One thing I know Lent is about is anticipation. Bright sadness. Christ is going to die, but then he will come back to life. "No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began...but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit." With all we've been reading lately about being the underdogs, this is like the beginning of the payoff. "I know you're down on your luck, but look there's this secret God's been keeping, and He's going to let you in on it!"
